 Founded in 1906 by Drs. Henry Norris and Montgomery H. Biggs, Rutherford Hospital, Inc. (RHI) today is a not-for-profit hospital governed by a local Board of Trustees licensed for 143 private acute care beds. Rutherford Hospital, Inc. is dedicated to providing patients with a full range of services to meet their healthcare needs.
RHI has over 90 qualified physicians and more than 20 medical specialties. Rutherford Hospital has experienced expansions since 1911, including
- 1995 expansion of the Outpatient and Surgery Center
- 2002 expansion of The Birth Place and Intensive Care Unit
- 2006 OneSource Healthcare (physical therapy, occupational therapy, speech therapy and industrial rehab programs) moved to a larger location
- 2008 expansion of the Cancer Resource Center
- 2008 remodel of the Surgery Medical floor which has larger patient rooms
- 2008 expansion of Emergency Room: Several new treatment rooms added to meet the growing deamsn of Emergency Care in Rutherford County
- 2010 expansion of Rutherford Orthopaedics (space doubled)

Rutherford Hospital, Inc. and affiliates is a network of not-for-profit operating affiliates located in Rutherfordton, North Carolina. The activities of the principal entities comprising the organization are summarized as follows:
- Rutherford Hospital – is a 143-bed acute care hospital providing inpatient, outpatient and emergency services primarily to the residents of Rutherford County, North Carolina.
- Carolina Community Care – provides comprehensive healthcare in the home environment primarily to the residents of and surrounding counties to Rutherford County, North Carolina. Services provided include home healthcare, companion services, and alternative programs for disabled adults.
- Physician Practices – is comprised of seven physician practices specializing in family medicine, behavioral health services, general surgery and orthopedic surgery practice.
- Rutherford Hospital Auxiliary – provides support to the programs, services and staff of Rutherford Hospital. The Auxiliary carries out this purpose by operating a gift shop within Rutherford Hospital.
- Rutherford Hospital Foundation – supports the health and welfare of the people of Rutherford County, North Carolina by promoting philanthropic contributions and public support for Rutherford Hospital.
