Top 100 Hospital:  A Repeat Performance and
an Everest Award Winner!

For the fourth year in a row, Rutherford Hospital has been selected as a Top 100 Hospital by Thomson Reuters Top Hospitals.  But the honor does not stop there.  Rutherford Hospital was also selected as a Top 100 Hospitals Everest Award Winner for National Benchmarks which honors a special group of the 2008 100 Top Hospitals National award winners.

What does all this mean for our patients?  National award winners have higher survival rates, keep more patients 'complication-free,' and attract more patients - all while maintaining financial stability. If all inpatients across the country received the same level of care as those in the 100 Top Hospitals:

  • More patients would survive each year;
  • More patient complications would be avoided annually;
  • Hospital expenses would decline;
  • The average patient stay would decrease

Rutherford Hospital was one of two facilities in the Carolinas among 23 nationally to be named an Everest Award winner for National Benchmarks. This new award from Thomson Reuters recognizes a hospital's rate of long-term improvement and establishes Rutherford Hospital as a national benchmark against which other hospitals will be compared.

David Bixler, CEO for Rutherford Hospital stated, "It's very difficult to be a top hospital, particularly during these challenging economic times.  Rutherford Hospital once again has proven its ability to maintain a nationally recognized level of excellence.  I am so proud of our incredible staff of doctors, nurses, therapists, technicians, support staff, and volunteers who devote their time and their lives to caring for patients at the highest level."

The Thomson Reuters 100 Top Hospitals(R) National Benchmarks study is based on the 100 Top Hospitals National Balanced Scorecard that evaluates performance in areas including mortality, medical complications, patient safety, average length of stay, healthcare cost, financials, patient satisfaction, and adherence to clinical standards of care. The study has been conducted annually since 1993.

"The 100 Top Hospitals winners raised the bar again this year, delivering a
higher level of reliable care and greater value for their communities and
payers," said Jean Chenoweth, senior vice president for performance
improvement and 100 Top Hospitals programs at Thomson Reuters.

To conduct the 100 Top Hospitals study, Thomson Reuters researchers evaluated 3,000 short-term, acute care, non-federal hospitals. They used public information as Medicare cost reports, Medicare Provider Analysis and Review (MedPAR) data, and Core Measures and patient satisfaction data from the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) Hospital Compare data set.
